Why Vietnam Women's Volleyball Declined – A View Through Bich Thuy's Shadow and Thanh Thuy's Overloaded Shoulders

I still remember the moment at the Asian Games when middle blocker Tran Thi Bich Thuy scored and did not celebrate like an outside hitter. She just turned and looked at her bench, as if she could not believe she had become the team's leading scorer. A middle blocker becoming the top scorer says everything about a broken attacking system. Vietnam's women's volleyball had a golden run: AVC Cup titles, SEA V.Cup titles, a World Championship appearance. This season, the target was an Asian Games top-four finish; the result was 7th place. At the Asian Championship, Vietnam won only one match. At the AVC Cup, they finished third, losing their three-year title streak. In the SEA V.Cup, they won the first stage but lost 0-3 in the second. They lost to Indonesia twice, to the Philippines, and to Kazakhstan. The first tactical red flag was that attacks from positions 2 and 4 were consistently blocked. This is not a power problem. Vietnam wins with variation, speed, and precision. When both wings were neutralized, the team over-relied on middle quick attacks. In a healthy system, the middle is a threat that opens the wings. This year, the middle became an escape valve. Opponents had figured out the offense. The biggest story is Tran Thi Thanh Thuy. She scored 36 points at the Asian Games, but with low efficiency. Her schedule ran from the Japanese league to VTV Binh Dien Long An, then four national-team tournaments starting in January. A captain cannot carry a whole season on her shoulders without breaking down. The second cause was the absence of key starters. Nguyen Thi Trinh missed time for family reasons. Hoang Thi Kieu Trinh was injured. Vi Thi Nhu Quynh left for personal reasons. Nguyen Thi Uyen suffered a serious injury. The coaching staff had to fill the opposite position with Doan Thi Xuan, Thanh Thuy, and Uyen. A national team cannot absorb the loss of three or four starters at once without depth. I disagree with those who call this a decline in talent. This is a structural decline, and structures can be fixed. But part of this decline may be permanent: Indonesia and the Philippines are no longer afraid of Vietnam. To regain the No. 2 position in Southeast Asia, Vietnam must build a system that does not depend on any single individual. The court does not ask about gender; it asks whether you are willing to stand up. The real test is next season. If the team returns at full strength, if Thanh Thuy's workload is managed, if young setters get chances, the story can be rewritten. If we repeat the old formula, this year will only be the beginning of a longer slide. Vietnamese women's volleyball does not lack talent. It lacks a humane system to nurture that talent.
