Altshuler Beats Bobi 3-1 in ITTF Para Challenger Spokane Final: The Loser Scored More Points

"Every revolution starts with a number left behind on the desk."

That number sits on the final summary line of the men's singles Class 6 final at the ITTF Para Challenger Spokane: Simion Bobi scored 42 points, Sam Altshuler scored 41. And Bobi lost 3-1.

The breakdown: 12-10, 4-11, 13-11, 12-10 to Altshuler. Three of the four games went to deuce. The only game Altshuler lost was also the game he lost by the widest margin, 4-11. The American beat the world No. 3, claimed the first Challenger gold medal of his career, and banked a 300-point boost on the international para world ranking.

In table tennis those three seconds fit inside a single game: the serve, the return, and the third ball that shapes the rally. In Spokane, though, the thing that did not lie was the last four balls of every deuce game.

Altshuler said afterwards: "It was a tough match in final, and it was great to get it done." He added: "If you told me two years ago, I never would have thought I would be at this level. I want to thank everyone supporting me and to thank my mom and dad for helping me throughout my whole journey in table tennis."

Class 6 is one of the standing classes in the ITTF classification system for athletes with impairments, covering the most severe impairment of both arms and legs among the standing categories. That means the margin for error is thin: a spin drifting a few centimetres wide, a supporting step half a beat late, and the game turns. The Challenger is the entry tier of the ITTF Para circuit, sitting below Para Elite. Points here are smaller than at higher-tier events, but for a player on the rise a single title can still produce a significant jump.

For Altshuler, that jump is 300 points. He moved from outside the top five into the world No. 6 spot, sitting just outside the leading group of five. The reward invites a harsh comparison: 300 points for one week of competition, while most players in the leading group accumulate their points across many scattered events over a season.

But back to the final.

In table tennis, the service rule changes as a game progresses. Before 10-10, each player serves two points in a row. From 10-10, each player serves one point at a time and must win by two. That switch decides who controls the rhythm. Deuce is the receiver's game. When service changes after every point, nobody gets a two-point block to build momentum; to win, you have to take points on your opponent's serve. Every deuce game you win requires exactly one break of serve and exactly one hold. There is no shortcut.

Altshuler won three deuce games out of three. That means he broke the serve of the world No. 3 at least three times at moments when a single small error ends a game. It is the kind of data that never shows up on a broadcast scoreboard, because the scoreboard only records 12-10, while the real question is who touched the ball on point number forty-something.

The second game is the only exception. Altshuler lost it 4-11, dropping seven points of margin, while his three wins came by a combined total of six points. Across the whole match, Bobi outscored Altshuler by exactly one point. If the match were scored on total points, as some sports are, Bobi wins. Scored by games, Altshuler wins 3-1 and takes gold.

There are two ways to read that 4-11. One reading is that Altshuler suffered a short technical collapse, lost his service rhythm and let Bobi attack freely. The other is that he deliberately let the game go to recover his breathing and re-establish his service structure for the two games that followed. The data is not enough to settle it. What it is enough to say is this: if the second reading is right, Altshuler just won a final through rhythm management rather than through overwhelming quality.

A Class 6 final at a Challenger in Spokane almost certainly had no broadcast camera on the table. The match was played on a side table in front of a small stand, and all that remains is a tidy scoreboard that cannot describe three breaks of serve. In my own tracking files across ITTF Para seasons, this is the biggest blind spot in the sport: the ranking system rests on points, but the quality of those points lives on tables nobody films.

Data does not replace the instinct of an old coach. It only hands him a more accurate map.

For Altshuler, the map ahead is already drawn. ITTF Para Elite Spokane begins on August 11, 2026 — an immediate test at a higher tier against a deeper field. In September 2026 he travels to Yvelines, France, for the next stop on the ITTF World Para Circuit. From November 13 to 19, 2026, the biggest stage of all is the ITTF Para World Championships in Pattaya, Thailand.

What I will be watching is not the medal count but the deuce win rate. Three out of three in Spokane is a fine ratio, but it still sits inside the band of luck: one ball off the edge of the rubber at 11-11 turns it into two out of three, and the whole story changes tone. If he keeps winning most of his deuce games at Para Elite Spokane, that is skill. If he wins 3-1 with a positive point differential, that is a level change. And if the summary line once again reads 42-41 in the wrong direction, we will know that Spokane was simply one week when every ball landed on the edge of the table.
